Facilitated Diffusion

Facilitated Diffusion

Description:

The process called facilitated diffusion takes place when a substance passes through a membrane being conveyed to the other side by a so-called carrier. Most carriers are permeases which are proteines changing conformation when getting in contact with a certain substance and thus carrying the substance through the membrane. Some of these carriers just convey one molecule at a thime (= uniport), others have bindings for two differend molecules and carry them only when really binding the both of them at the same time. In this case, the molecules are either transported in the same direction (= symport) or change sides through the membrane (= antiport).
